IMPROVING THREE-YEAR-OLDSHandicappers must pay attention whenever a three-year-old begins to soar. Three-year-olds can improve tremendously, and regularly do. Whenever a three-year-old is claimed by a competent trainer and next out improves dramatically while up in class, handicappers should expect further improvement still, probably against better. A reliable indicator of improvement among 3YO's is an improved pace figure in combination with an improved speed figure while up in class. It's not unusual that a good trainer will find the key to an improving three-year-old. If a three-year-old impresses versus better following a claim, the best is probably yet to come.
